Peer Review Process
Peer Review Process
Fashion Studies accepts submissions based on a double-blind review process. All stages of the submission process will be conducted online, through the Fashion Studies e-mail address. We will match submissions and reviewers according to your topic, medium and methodology. In doing so, we hope to ensure a fair and effective review process. We want to create a trustworthy, safe space for you to access comments and feedback, in the hopes of eventually publishing your work!
While interviews and exhibition and event reviews will not be formally peer reviewed, the Fashion Studies editorial team will offer copyedits and suggestions as needed prior to publication.
Potential Outcomes
There are three potential outcomes to the peer review process:
Accepted
REJECTED
REVISE AND RESUBMIT
In some cases, a submission may be accepted immediately (hooray!). This means that little to no reviews are needed and that the work can no longer be published anywhere else. Alternatively, a submission may be rejected; this means it no longer has any affiliation with the journal and will not be published in that issue. Finally, (and most commonly) we may ask that you revise and resubmit your submission. In this case, revisions are needed in order for the work to be accepted. This is no big deal; it just means that you get to decide whether or not to proceed with the process. Once updated, the submission will be reviewed again! This will continue until the piece is either accepted or rejected.
Stages
There are five stages to the peer review process:
Stage 1
EMAIL SUBMISSION
REVIEWED BY EDITORIAL TEAM
RESULTS
All submissions will be sent in over e-mail to fashionstudies@ryerson.ca. They will then be reviewed by our editorial team before moving on to Stage 2. Creators will be notified of receipt of submission and on Stage 2 results.
Stage 2
anonymous PEER REVIEW by two independent reviewers
RECOMMENDATION
RESULTS
Scholarly and creative academics will review submissions according to the matching process conducted by the editorial team. Submissions will be allocated two reviewers each in order to strengthen the process. Once complete, reviewers will send the editorial team their recommendation on how to proceed.
Stage 3
REVISION SUMMARY
RECOMMENDATION
RESULTS
Creators will receive a revision summary with suggested recommendations from the Fashion Studies team, which will include a letter summarizing the feedback received from the reviewers and our co-editors, in addition to the peer reviews. This summary will include whether or not the submission has been accepted, rejected or recommended for revise and resubmit. Stage 3 will continue until a submission is accepted or rejected for that issue.
Stage 4
SIGNED CONTRACT
FINAL REVIEW
CREATOR APPROVES EDITS
Contracts will be sent out to accepted submission creators. Once all submissions are finalized, they will be sent back to the editorial team for final review. The editorial team will send back any changes to creators for approval; however, edits made at this point are at the discretion of the editorial team due to time constraints surrounding publication.
Stage 5
FINALIZED SUBMISSION
POST ONLINE
PUBLISHED
Finalized submissions will be posted online for viewing by the editorial team. Creators will not be contacted in regards to any formatting changes needed due to time constraints surrounding publication. Co-editors will publish the issue!
