Mia Yaguchi-Chow

Art Director

Toronto Metropolitan UNIVERSITY

Mia (they/them) is a multidisciplinary artist born and raised in Toronto, Ontario. After receiving their Bachelor of Design in Fashion (2021) and their Master of Arts in Fashion (2024) at Toronto Metropolitan University, they are working in the field specializing in graphic design, photography, illustration, visual storytelling, and more. As their MA Fashion MRP, Mia pursued a research-informed community arts project entitled “Dear Diary, This is My Gender Today” which was also presented as part of the Fashion Studies Network symposium Unravelling Fashion Narratives. As their 4th year undergraduate capstone, Mia also pursued a project called “We Are The Machine” which investigated the ways people use Instagram to express and cultivate their identities on and offline. Mia seeks to disrupt and subvert conventions in academia and research with “alternative” research methods, radical thinking, community care, and unapologetic expression.

Mia began at Fashion Studies in 2019 as Graphic Designer, proceeding to Graphic Design & Project Lead in 2023, and is completing their contract as Art Director overseeing the Fashion Studies design team. During their time at TMU, Mia has led the Asian Fashion Student Association (AFSA) (2021-2024), designed the exhibition identity of Cripping Masculinity: Designing Fashion Utopias (2022-2023), was Art Director of StyleCircle (2020-2021), and more. Outside of academia, Mia spends their time on personal creative projects and experimenting with their practice, seeking ways to share knowledge and create opportunities for their community.
