Mimi Thi Nguyen is an Associate Professor of Gender and Women’s Studies and Asian American Studies at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. Her first book, The Gift of Freedom: War, Debt, and Refugee Passages was published by Duke University Press in 2012, and she is currently working on her second, The Promise of Beauty, about aesthetic responses to crisis and uncertainty and political disputes about the beauty we deserve. She has previously published essays about postwar and humanitarian aesthetics and about the circulation of the hoodie through antiblackness. Nguyen is also a former volunteer and sometime contributor to Maximumrocknroll.
